Like other human beings in this world, I do also have other dimensions of life outside jobs and academic activities.
People often ask whether I would like to learn Cantonese, especially since now I have a job in Hong Kong. My answer is that I do really love to but arguably it is hard to pick up one language systematically - listening, speaking, writing, and reading. With over 20 years of my life, it remains the fact that I still fail to perfect my English!
It has been my dream to live my life in Hong Kong as I love Hong Kong culture. I grew up along the flourishing era of "TVB" (Television Broadcasts Limited) - so called "Golden 80's". Ever since not more than ten years old, I was introduced to the very first famous TVB series at the time:
"The Legend of the Condor Heroes" ( 射鵰英雄傳 )
Now, you may know how old I am!!!
Also, "The Return of the Condor Heroes" ( 神鵰俠侶 )
and, last but not least, within the Trilogy:
"New Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre" ( 倚天屠龍記 )
Not only this kind of TV series I kept following at the time. I also loved watching good modern series. Among them, only one I wish to mention here. Perhaps, it is the most watched Hong Kong series of all time - "Looking Back in Anger" ( 義不容情 )
How do I understand these series? They were all dubbed in Thai language!
With Looking Back in Anger, I was also introduced to my favourite singer who rendered his perfect voice in this series with the song 一生何求 and also many other songs. To date, I still listen to his songs. Yes, I am old! I am mentioning of "Danny Chan Bak-Keung" ( 陳百強 )
Although I do not understand his songs, I still love his voice. I hope one day I will understand Cantonese so that I can understand the meaning of his songs. I heard that, as good as he is as a singer, he is also a great composer.
I have ventured along education road until I reached a PhD. It does not mean that I only read academic books. I am also a fan of other good books. I do not like novels though. I am a big follower of self-improvement books as I know that I am far from perfect and there are many aspects which I wish I can develop further.
In the past, I used to read The 7th Habit of Highly Effective Peopleby Stephen R. Covey but it was long time ago and I am thinking of re-reading it again if I have time.
I am also expecting to read The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness also by the same writer
But, now I am getting hold of Dale Carnegie's series:
How to Win Friends & Influence People
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living
and The Leader in You
I am a strong learner of Buddhism but unfortunately I am not qualified to say that I am a strong follower. What so-called "Nirvana" is just too far away.
Indeed, life is amazing!!!
